Why a Sydney philosopher? George Molnar was 17 when he came to Sydney as a refugee from Hungary, studied and lectured philosophy at Sydney University and became a member of the Sydney Push. He went to live in the UK in 1976 but in 1982 he decided he was “a Sydney boy” after all. Whilst he remained quintessentially a European intellectual as Inge Riebe points out in her brilliant introduction, he also belonged to the Australian school of metaphysics, which he jokingly called “matey-physics”. Molnar’s posthumously published book Powers: A Study in Metaphysics has been widely cited.
